Synopsis:

When everything you love is in danger, how long can you keep running to survive?

Life can be brutalWinter in Idaho. The sky is dark. It is cold enough to crack bones. Jack knew it.

Jack Dahl has nothing left. Except his younger brother, Matty, who he’d die for. Their mother is gone, and their funds are quickly dwindling, Jack needs to make a choice: lose his brother to foster care, or find the drug money that sent his father to prison.

So did I

Ava lives in isolation, a life of silence. For seventeen years her father, a merciless man, has controlled her fate. He has taught her to love no one.

Did I feel the flutter of wings when Jack and I met? Did I sense the coming tornado?

But now Ava wants to break the rules – to let Jack in and open her heart. Then she discovers that Jack and her father are stalking the same money, and suddenly Ava is faced with a terrible choice: remain silent or speak out and help the brothers survive.

Looking back, I think I did . .

My Review:

What Beauty There Is had me hooked from the moment I picked up this book. Cory Anderson’s has a real talent in making her writing magical and she had me feeling incredible attached to the characters and honestly had me wanting them to get a little bit of happiness or normality. This book will stay in my mind for a long time I feel.

I think it is incredibly important to mention before I carry on with the rest of my review, that this book is really for the older readers of YA. It is pretty hard hitting with the dark and difficult topics which Cory Anderson does not choose to shy away from. There are certainly some trigger warnings for this one and some bits I personal struggled to read. Here are some trigger warnings: absent parent, child abuse, murder, suicide, animal death, violence and drug use/dealing.

The main character Jack is a 17 year old and he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. Jack is also the responsible for his brother Matty. All Jack wants is to make sure his brother is safe and doesn’t end up in the hands of child services. Jack is a character is someone I felt so so sorry for he really has to cope with things I would not want anyone to deal with but his love for his brother is incredibly clear. I found myself wanting Jack to be able to be a teenager without having to carry so much pressure.

His brother Matty had my heart the whole way through, I felt the need to dive into the story myself just to wrap him up in a hug and let him know he would be okay. Again his love for his brother was clear. However he has already had so so much to deal with at such a young age and it broke my heart.

This story may not have been an easy read and at times had me crying hysterically. However it is one of the most beautifully written stories I have read in a long time and I would highly recommend. Just be warned it is not for the faint hearted.
